This is the first release of a Blanc de Noir sparkling for Brown Brothers. It was driven by the quality of the 2015 vintage and the chance to experiment on a new sparkling style.

Blanc de Noir, literally “white from black”, means white wine made from red or black grapes. In this case a sparkling made from the Pinot Noir variety.

Fresh and crisp with a lingering citrus element, this wine will be perfect with canapes, oysters, smoked salmon or tiger prawns.

Wine Analysis: Alc/Vol: 12.5%
Colour: A vibrant pale gold colour belies the age of the wine
Aroma: A lifted red berry fruit flavour and a sour dough bread yeastiness
Palate: Fresh and crisp with a lingering citrus element
Peak Drinking: Until 2021

Recommended food pairings: The perfect accompaniment to a range of canapés including freshly shucked oysters, smoked salmon on croutons or tiger prawns and lemon and dill dipping sauce. For something more substantial try yellowfin tuna, pan fried and served with Asian greens or a crumbed chicken breast and a fresh herb chimichurri.

Growing Conditions: The grapes were handpicked and whole bunch pressed with the fruit harvested in February 2015 at 10.6 baumé.

Winemaker: Cate Looney

Winemaking notes: The wine was made in strict adherence to Traditional Méthod techniques with 100% of the wine undergoing malo lactic fermentation, and a long, slow secondary fermentation in the bottle. It spent 33 months resting on lees prior to disgorging and liquoring. The wine has an alcohol of 12.5%, a pH of 3.27, an acid level of 7.0 g/l.

Pritzker recognised that quality, writing, “An enticing bouquet of freshly baked biscuit and brioche, with chalky undertones. Excellent intensity in an elongated palate supported by chalky minerality. Elegant, with impressive line and length. Delicate biscuity buttered toast to the finish.” It’s fine and fresh, the red fruits and subtle yeast complexity combining beautifully. There’s great balance, too. This would equally serve as an aperitif or with food.”
